Not sure why you didn't ask them first. But what's done is done. If you don't want heat between you and your neighbor, apologize for not talking first and then end it. Sometimes admitting you were wrong first is all it takes.

Otherwise, ignore all of it and don't feed the drama. The more you feed it, the worse it gets. If you feel you did the right thing then let it go. Stop texting about it and don't argue over it.
