I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know exactly what you mean. I guess it's because some non-generic medications are quite expensive?
On the other hand, it's interesting you should call it a "rich person" thing, because often poorer people are on meds that aren't the best for them because medication can be cheap in comparison to other things. For example, nursing homes and other institutions will put individuals on unnecessary antipsychotics rather than dealing more effectively with health/behavioral problems. Also, sometimes young kids who are poor or are in foster homes will be placed on meds instead of receiving therapy or having their situation improved in some way.
It's all about what's cost effective in many cases.
