I broker my 70-year-old employer's services in an ancient technology passed down to her by her father, who had been trained by the Japanese government. She doesn't speak English and I shield her from the distracting and the mundane by interacting with clients, documenting contracts, managing expectations and liabilities, setting prices, keeping records, arranging shipping, paying bills and maintaining a social media presence so that she can practice her craft interrupted only by golf on military courses and lunch in town with separate cliques of Buddhist priests and Yakuza club owners. My employer will soon retire and food is really expensive out here, so I'll probably end up driving for friggin' Uber.
