In situations like yours, I always head for the local library as they have community booklets, newspapers, etc. (ours has them on top of waist-high shelves in the reference section) and I go along and grab whatever if free/looks interesting. Too, they have all the catalogs for local community colleges, rec centers, and universities, etc. I just sit and leaf through stuff and see what catches my interest and do a bit of day dreaming.

My library online has a schedule too of what's happening at the library, I noted there's a book group meeting the end of this month at mine and I bought the book they'll be discussing and I'll decide in a week or two if I want to go to that? Volunteering is a good idea, I use to volunteer for my library Friends groups, work the book sale, etc. It's not much pressure and there are other people to meet. Taking adult ed classes at the local community college or rec center can be a good place to meet people too.
