Had one, HATED IT! Had it removed after 3 months.... PMS symptoms all month long, 25 times worse than anything I'd ever experienced before. I was miserable. My breasts were so sore that I hated to even wear a shirt! Crampy, crampy, crampy.... My periods went from being normal for 5 days to heavy bleeding for 10 days. We're talking soaking through the largest size tampon and a pad within an hour for over a week! (Sorry if TMI, but yeah...)

It doesn't have hormones in it, BUT copper in your system can affect your hormone levels. I did TONS of research after having it inserted and experiencing these symptoms from hell. I know that I'm one of the minority in this regard, but I'm far from being the only one.

I'm now super sensitive to copper. I can't take vitamins with copper in them, supplements with copper in them, and even soy is a no-go due to the high copper content of soy. I also found that the copper IUD can indeed cause copper toxicity symptoms like I experienced.

The IUD literature will tell you that it puts minute amounts of copper into your system that cannot possibly cause copper toxicity issues....but, the truth is that its constantly leaking copper into your system. Think about it....there's a reason why there are daily recommended allowances for copper. Just because the copper is inserted into your uterus doesn't mean that the body doesn't absorb it any differently than if you ate copper in your diet.

So....maybe you'll tolerate it well, but don't be fooled into thinking that the side effects will necessarily be more mild because it doesn't have hormones.
