Don't give up!
For four years, it seemed as if it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all (blues song lyric).
Three permanent slots were open where I had a nine-month contract, and after slaving away for 10-hour days, I wasn't one of the three chosen.
Soon after, I went through the motions of interviews for another job and did what I had to do, but I was so shell-shocked from life, I could not even put any emotional investment or hope into the whole process.
Weeks passed. Then almost out of the blue, they offered the job, with a big raise (12%), more opportunities to advance, and better responsibilities.
Keep up your spirits, please. Life can turn on a dime.
