I went off and thanks to a good psych doc I found I had low estrogen and thyroid disease. Months later I was able to take zoloft again and added estrogen and started thyroid meds and slowly increased and got my life back in 2008. Did fine except some foggy brain and not a great sense of well being but was not depressed or anxious and lived life to the fullest that I could with thyroid issues. I was very happy.
I crashed again in oct of last year. Same thing. Could not tolerate zoloft again and went slightly hyper. Went down on thyroid meds and not cannot tolerate them very well. Although I am hypo. Have been tested for everything. Dhea is high and morning cortisol. Cannot tolerate any psch meds and tried 2 treatments of TMS that made me more depressed. I am now at a loss. I feel no one can help me. My body has turned against me and I am sensitive to everything almost. The thyroid meds are somehow acting weird when I take them. My last resort I'm afraid is ECT. I'm really scared it will make me worse. I have read that it can possibly help reset the Hpa axis as I feel mine is gone haywire. The depression and anxiety are really bad. I always have bad derealization when depressed and it really bad this time. I'm scared of everything. I keep crying to my doctor not to let me end up in an institution because I feel I will never get better ( I know this is depression and it's cruel thoughts ). The suffering is unbearable. I drink a glass or 2 of wine at night and then take ativan to help me sleep. It's the only relief I get. I'm just scared. Really scared. Thank you in advance for any responses.
Hi Sipsy,

It sounds like you MIGHT well be depressed mainly because you have hypothyroidism. That is something that any competent MD should check for and not just give you Zoloft.

I personally think that the first thing you should do is prioritize and go over these things very carefully with your Doctor. I strongly suspect that the top priority should be getting your thyroid hormones stable and in the normal range. This may take multiple adjustments if you are taking supplements. If this is out of whack, nothing else is going to make you feel much better. It may sound stupid, but if you taking thyroid supplements, make SURE to take them exactly as directed. This will probably be the first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach. I think that should include no coffee or tea or breakfast or anything for a solid hour. You have to take it religiously every single day, never skipping. I would recommend getting a pill organizer ( I use one of those, otherwise I would definitely forget).

Once your thyroid is stabilized, I would ask your doctor to go through each of the physical issues that can case depression. There are many of these and they are common. I have a partial list here:

If it was me, I would be carefully checking every one of these common possibilities before anything else.
