I broke free from mental illness when I accepted the fact that I'm mentally ill.
It was no different than my accepting the fact that I'm an alcoholic and gay.
For mental illness, I take my meds, exercise, get adequate sleep, eat a sensible diet, don't isolate, avoid triggers, and try to keep a positive outlook on life.
