It's the nature of emotions. They are ephemeral. I just saw an article (forget which one, I was reading a lot) on the main site that said the average emotional response in a normal person lasts 12 seconds. When people have a sustained emotional response to another, it's because they have built up a situation where it is always renewing itself, and even then they don't feel it all the time, it comes and goes.
