Inny -
You did the right thing! I worked third shift in a gas station and had a really odd guy come in. There were other people in the store and so he kept bringing different things up to the register, dented cans of vegetables, milk, etc. Every time people left the store he started heading toward the register.
Thankfully one of my friends came in and I told him not to leave me. Then, the cop that was always on my beat came in to get a cup of coffee. As soon as he did the guy high tailed it to the register to check out. I rang his stuff up and it came to $20.00 (keep in mind this was on a Friday night at midnight in 1984). He opened his wallet and had no money - gee really?
I told him it was okay I'd put everything back and I kept making eyes at the cop. When the guy left the cop asked what was up and I told him, so he went to go after him.
My friend left and about 10 minutes later someone else came in and said there were 5 cop cars in the back of the store with some guy up against a van. The cop came in later and they had arrested him. He had a knife over 5 inches in his boot!
When we went to court he was let off because they said it was an illegal search (didn't have enough justification) and the guys attorney was arguing that he should get this knife back that was illegal for him to be carrying in the first place!
I'm sure that girl is very grateful to you for what you did. I think the bf over reacted and you weren't putting yourself in danger just by letting her know what was up.
Tranquility
