My thought right now is that this guy is not fully alive. He is not able to "animate" himself. He needs strings to control his movements, and when he stares at you he seems unable to come up with his own facial expressions or words.

He could represent the "masculine within." In this case the dream is saying that your masculine qualities which normally would be integrated with your personality are unable to express themselves... they are lying dormant or are highly controlled by something in your psyche.
