Have you considered a non-demon pdoc? They do come in that variety you know......Yours sounds like a jerk.
Last year I had ankle surgery and my orthopedist usually does the procedure at an outpatient clinic. I told him I knew it needed to be done at the main campus because of my MAOI requiring a specially trained anesthesiologist. He translated that into "Pt. states surgery needs to be at main campus due to bipolar and PTSD". His listening skills for some things were pointless. I am very happy with the surgery and we got along ok by the end of it (had a conflict on surgery day because his nurse neglected to tell him I planned to refuse a nerve block and me that he insists on them) but his understanding of bipolar led to things like I was knocked out before entering the OR fully. I am an occupational therapist, not easily bothered by medical stuff but he only saw mental illness and so he misintrepreted things. But it was ok because he was a surgeon and they are supposed to be insensitive jerks. Your pdoc has no such excuse and it sounds like he acts like an orthopedist with enough success to be reasonably arrogant and not interested in mental illness (plus pdoc and not interested in MI=problem.....)
