If you go private you need to make sure you see a registered chartered psychologist, you will be able to find one using this website............

If you want to find a psychologist via the NHS the normal route is through your GP doctor. You will need to see a clinical psychologist, unfortunately there is a long waiting list but worth getting your name on that list.
If you can share with your GP he may refer you to other counselling while you are waiting to see a psychologist. There are nurse therapists usually attached to GP surgeries.
Or your GP might refer you to a Community mental health team that have psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, community psychiatric nurses and social workers. One of the team may be able to help.
Also remember in therapy you can say as much or as little as you want to and go at the speed you want to, ie build up trust first.
