I find that starting out with what I want to get out of the session will set the tone, rather than her asking the usual "how have you been" and then you explaining everything that's happened since you last saw them.
As far as the gun in the house - if your concerned, is there someone you can give it to until your family returns? A neighbor, friend, someone?
Just a thought. If you remove the temptation, then there can be no temptation.......
