I have a couple of thoughts on it. I DO believe that this particular tattoo has become very popular and has the potential (no matter how abhorrent we, here, find the idea) of being abused.
I do like it as a symbol, though, and would get it somewhere that is not easily seen. It would be MY tattoo for ME. I don't have to advertise any successes or failures in my life.

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck and I wear my hear down. It's of my husbands and my initials intertwined but are not visible as such unless pointed out. It's very sweet and very intimate.

Some, I know, are purely decoration and that's fine if that's what you want to do. But tattoos like the semi colon are very very personal in my opinion...nothing to be ashamed of but also nothing to be advertised.
