Not sure what it really is either. It is like UCLAFan stated where they are rude to you but nice in public. My wife is like that. She does not compliment me in private but she says the nicest things to people outside of my ears. So when my friends or acquaintances come up to me and says that my wife told them this...it paints a confusing pictures. Good question and a great topic for conversation!
