Flattery can be difficult at times to know if it is sincere or not. I think you have to take into consideration the context of the flattery and who it is from.

Is it coming from someone who only says nice things when they need something? Then most likely they want something in return.

Is it coming from someone you just met? Maybe they are trying to break the ice and find something nice to compliment you about.

If it's coming from me, it is meant in the most sincerest of ways. I believe at times we are too difficult on ourselves and need to be reminded that we have postive qualities that others see. So I love to point them out!
