I don't even understand why this whole debate is such a hot topic for "nons", seems misguided. Why waste your time debating whether or not your spouse/parent/whoever is aware of how much of a jerk they are to you and start thinking about what to do to protect yourself from someone who's clearly toxic to you?

It's a "hot topic" (I wouldn't call it a hot topic...more like an interesting sidetrack) because people want to understand things...and better understanding usually leads to being better able to help yourself when you come up against something.
Exposure to anything beforehand, through first person experiences or through other indirect methods, usually negates at least a little bit of shock or temporary befuddlement caused by an event.
There are definitely people who are not self aware. Imagine having a hundred different motives that all look and act like one thing but in the end turn out to be something completely different...
we want food...ok. why?
Because we're hungry.
Because it tastes good.
Because we'll die without it.
Because we want to cook.
Because we want to give it away.
Because we want to perfect a recipe.
Because we want to try out our new kitchen utensils.
Because it promotes a positive atmosphere in a living environment.
Because it makes you or someone close to you happy to see you cooking.
All of those could be floating around in our subconscious but only come to the surface or be recognized as, "I want food." (Food is just an example...there are lots of things, of course)
I feel like I kind of got sidetracked there lol...what was I talking about again? (lol I'm an idiot) ...I think I was trying to say that all kinds of people aren't aware of why they do things the way they do. They just do what seemingly comes naturally to them/what they want.
Maybe not, just what I think lol
