I take sodium valproate along with Abilify, and they together seem to help with my mood swings. I also take paroxetine for depression, but used to take sertraline for many years.

The various pdocs I saw told me sodium valproate is often used along with another mood stabilizer or antipsychotic to help stabilize mood swings. You might want to ask your pdoc if this might be your case.
