Therapy can work. Having trust issues and feeling vigilant describe a lot of folks in therapy! I have found that therapy with the right therapist is powerfully healing.
For me, that meant taking a few years to be able to trust this person and the therapist being patient enough to wait for my trust. Her doing that, being steadfast in her commitment to work with me, actually increased my feeling safe in the world. If we never got to the underlying issues, I'd still consider the therapy effective for that reason. The relationship itself can be quite healing.
