I'm in a field with relatively few practitioners. I like to talk about it, and feel some pride in my practice.
But, I sometimes get setups from people basically asking me to prove my expertise on the spot.
I think some solutions might be to be as vague as possible. I'm actually in a position where I could charge just for my knowledge.
Another may be to suggest someone come in to my shop with the item, so we're talking on my home turf, instead of theirs.
Can anyone else relate? I suspect that sometimes I bring this on myself by bringing it up at all, but still.... Is there really any need for the setup?
It feels most satisfying when I am just a little on the vague side and keep something back.
