The wick can't catch fire unless the tank is completely empty. Even then it won't burst into flames, it will just get a little dry and maybe scorched. Cotton isn't used for all wicks. My current wicks are silica I think (GS Air tank). They can taste off if you let the tank get too empty/dry.

maybe mine isnt cotton either but i have heard some high end ones used cotton. i have a high end one. idk what it uses. i should check.

idk how flammable the liquid is. and then take into account the battery like you said. im afraid. because i had an accident with one of my ecigs. the button got pressed in my bag while i was walking in the mall so it was like "vaping" while i was walking and browsing-pretty much going off. and it got EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HOT. i mean hot. i thought my bag was gonna catch on fire. i went to the nearest mall entrance and took it out and took it apart and it had liquid coming out of it. even the battery. liquid had escaped out of the tank into the battery compartment. i was so nervous. im never using that brand again or that ecig. ever. i bought another one that day. i just couldnt believe it. it was a nightmare.
