I used to be really scared of the hospital, but it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. I had my own room, bathroom and shower, and the staff would check on me every 15 minutes but not come in if I was using the bathroom. I was also allowed to shave my legs on my own, but had to turn in the razor after I was through with it. They do try to respect your privacy, within limits of course, and in my experience the worst invasion of privacy was when they did "safety checks" (going through my stuff at 6 AM). Otherwise, it wasn't a bad experience. Please don't be scared---if you need the hospital, go.
