I think they mean that sometimes they want someone to listen and be present with them without offering solutions or pointing out the bright side.

I love positive people too and I am one. But I have to watch that I don't force that optimism on someone who needs a compassionate ear and companionable silence rather than a solution, which they may not be ready for at that point.
