My boyfriend told me of a long time friend he's known since high school whos been working the same serving job at this restaurant for like 9 years about how he's stayed for so long because he's 'comfortable' He has a degree (I forget what it is at the moment) that's not really applicable in the work world and so he stays there because he makes decent pay. Yet I've seen him, He's not the happiest person all the time. He told my bf before how he's lazy, and that's why he stays. But just the other day when he told my bf he stays there because he's comfortable there, he also revealed to my bf how he's an alcoholic, and that's why his money gets so low sometimes- he's even had to borrow from family during the slow season- supposedly he doesn't drink that often, but when he does- he'll go out with friends and spend close to $100 a night.
I didn't know this- I feel bad, it sound like he's been in denial of his issues in the past - he's not yet 40, he talks about not ever finding 'the right woman' and so forth and that's why he doesn't bother trying to date- but clearly he's unhappy, which leads him to drink to excess enough times to have it keep him barely making ends meet at times- it's not anyway to go through life. So, besides the fact that I hope he gets help and betters himself- I also hope he has the fortitude to pursue a career/life that makes him happy.
Which leads me to the title of my post.
Would you rather be 'comfortable' or happy in life?
I'd much rather be happy.
And while it sucks that my life has not turned out the way I've wanted it to and I have many regrets and have a lot of hard work to do to get where I want to be, I'd much rather go through struggles to get there than sit back and just let life pass me by being comfortable. I might as well kill myself now, lol.
