It’s difficult for me to find the words to describe how much I hate companies like Facebook and Twitter. I even hate the words social media. It wasn’t that long ago when people were calling it social networking. And within the last 5 years it morphed into this horrible thing that we call social media. People are using the word media to describe the services as if the majority of the information is actually news worthy. I think Facebook and Twitter is basically a data mining service that is mostly composed of useless mundane information. I hate the fact that I can’t go to a website or walk down most streets without seeing an F or bird sign.
Most of my friends and acquaintances think I’m weird because I don’t use social media services. The only people in my social circles that are not on social media are computer savvy people over the age of 40 that are worried about a lack of privacy, data mining, and the hardware / software vulnerabilities on most smartphones. I used to have a Myspace account before it became obsolete because of Facebook. I visited the Twitter website a couple of times, but I’m not a member, and I don’t think I will be making any tweets in the future. I even hate the lingo that’s derived from the service. You’ll never hear me say the words hash tag in a conversation unless I’m talking about how much I hate the words. # will always be number or pound in my mind. I opened a Facebook account in 2008 so I could play a video game. I logged on 4 years later in 2012, and I haven’t visited the site since 2014.
I suppose that I hate social media for the same reasons that I hate most reality television shows. Most people just aren’t that interesting, and I’m also an introvert and bit of a misanthrope. I probably sound like a senior citizen complaining about how much he or she hates the current state of things, but I’m only in my early 30s, and I’ve been this way since my late teens. I hate the way most of our entertainment and technological services have evolved since the beginning of this century. The only kind of social networking service that I would be interested in using something (with a good privacy policy) that would be like a combination of Match.com / POF.com, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Meetup.com. It would have to be a service that uses comprehensive psych profiles and better algorithms to create ideal matches for business relationships, friendships, sexual relationships, and recreational activities.
