My son is 13, he has issues. Not surprisingly because both me and his dad are bipolar. This year has been tough as his pdoc refused to medicated him for anything but adhd leaving him at times in raged, suicidal or hearing things. So now he's going bald without proper care. He meets his new pdoc next month. Our fights always end in apologies. I'm not "here" enough to fight on either side of the spectrum. So in cycles I chose not to fight, either his dad handles it or it slides by. We're fighting now more than ever. He's got it into his head that he can talk back, ignore and outright refuse to do things. Poor kid deals with so much on top of teen things. I'm so thankful for his T and really hope his new pdoc works out so school can take top priority.
Both myself and my husband have BP. I don't know how non BP couples work because you have to have BP to really understand the situations.
