Before my manic-spending financial apocalypse, I used to keep about a $10k-$12k buffer in my bank accounts. Now I cap it at $3k. Anything above that goes straight into a brokerage account (Fidelity) where I can't easily spend it on a whim. It's trickier to get by on a slimmer bank account, but limits the potential damage too.
