things that make me scratch my head....

i was reading the short term disability policy offered through my company's insurance plan...

i happen to read the following policy exlusions pertaining to mental illness...

We will not pay benefits for any Total or Partial Disability which is caused by, contributed to by, or resulting from:
- an intentionally self-inflicted injury or sickness, whether you are sane or insane
- an attempted suicide, whether you are sane or insane...

what do they consider the cause and what is the result?

if i'm a baseball pitcher and i cut off my arm what is not covered (1) the fact that i can't do my job because i have no arm or (2) the depression that caused me to cut my arm off

who hurts and/or tries to kill himself and does not suffer from depression or some mental illness?

so is that covered - the depression and/or mental illness?

and if depression and/or mental illness is coverend then why exlude self injury and suicide attempts?

i've never heard of a happy person trying to kill himself?

what am i missing?
