I've just finished reading "Free to Learn" by psychologist Peter Gray.

He talks about the Sudbury School and schools like it, where pupils have complete freedom to determine what they learn, and at what pace.

It doesn't seem to affect their intellectual abilities, these kids go on to get normal jobs, some even become doctors and academics.

Anyone got any first hand experience?
