They can do anything they like! Your question may be better phrased as "is it legal for them to do so."
I suspect that if they intend to "let you go" they are already documenting each and every one of your mis-steps to pad your file so that it looks like they are doing this for "cause" of some kind.
It is your right to ask to see your personnel file, and to go to counseling for any reason.
