I had a co-worker who was totally open about his clinical depression and people were incredibly supportive. He was never the least bit apologetic or ashamed of his illness, so maybe his natural confidence reflected back on him. Or maybe he was simply seeking support from the right group of people. If you really feel that you'll receive the support you'd like, and not be adversely affected if people are jerks...go for it!
