I don't have children yet and I'm 2 years short of 30 and my boyfriend and I have talked about it. I think my major concern is that I'll pass my problems on to my children and that they'll be troubled with BP or alcoholics too (recovering alcoholic here). I've read a lot about the chances of passing mental disorders on to your children.

(From an article I read) "Yes, bipolar disorder runs in families; it is the most genetic major psychiatric condition. It is more genetic than schizophrenia and major depression. If you have a parent or sibling with bipolar disorder, then there is a 10-15% likelihood that you will develop it."

I suppose the chances are not high, but what if?

A few yrs ago I had a miscarriage but when I told my pdoc that I have to get off my meds because I was preg, he said "people like you shouldn't have children". Needless to say that was the last time I saw that a*shole.
