My husband was diagnosed with glaucoma when he was in his early fifties. It had been going on for some time they said. His eyes had always been perfect so he had never been tested. The best advice I can give you is to follow your doctor's orders. If they say to use drops then use drops. They help keep the pressure from building up and therefore preventing more damage. It is good that you are on top of this.
