Not all benzos have recreational value, many will just knock you out if you take them at higher doses...

It's really not worth doing so though because it'll just increase tolerance, meaning when you do need them they are less likely to work & also run the risk of addiction.

SSRIs can indeed be helpful for chronic anxiety, they are generally prescribed for GAD. The reason benzos exist as you aptly alluded to is because they are for relief of other acute types of anxiety i.e. panic attacks, social anxiety

Personally, I was diagnosed with mild GAD & put on an SSRI. Alongside talk therapy it pretty much completely got my anxiety under control.

I see someone already mentioned Buspar.

There is also Propranolol which can be used to ease the physical symptoms of anxiety.
