Hi there Twirls -- I live on that big sandbar known as South Florida, and I've had dogs in my life. I've also fleas in the car just from beach sand on the mats.

I'm not sure what you can put on the skin to stop the itching. Benadryl has a new spray product; I've been using that for mosquito bites, and it does a good job of stopping the itch by counteracting the histamines. Another way to neutralize the histamines is to hold the bites under very hot water -- not so hot you burn yourself of course -- for quite a few minutes. This also brings the histamines that cause the itching out. Relief will last for a few hours.

Here is a much safer alternative for eliminating the fleas that bug sprays. It sounds like an old wives' tale, but I've used it, and it is the only thing that ever worked for me.

Sprinkle Boraxo over the floors and carpets. Fleas lay eggs in the carpet, and even in the cracks between floorboards. Work the Boraxo into the rug with a stiff-bristle broom. The Boraxo prevents the eggs from hatching when they are laid. Fleas do not live on us or dogs; they hop on us to feed only. You have to repeat the application of the Boraxo as often as necessary. At first, you may need to do it after two weeks; then after a month; then every three months or so.

Boraxo is a safe, natural substance. This works. My X and I tried it only after everything else failed -- exterminators and flea baths and dips, etc. We were out of alternatives. And it works, it really works.
