That's a really good point. I've noticed people use "mother/father" instead of "mom/dad" or "mummy/daddy". It's highly respectful, but indicates no warmth or love really, and a lot of coldness from the parent which the child is clearly picking up.
I can't ever recall calling my father "daddy" when I was a boy, when I addressed him, or going to him to ask him "Daddy, can you help me with X...?" And then of course from about 10 I vowed never to ask him anything again after yet another temper tantrum because I asked him to do something for me.
