It sounds like his mother's amphetamine abuse contributed to his PTSD. I would guess that her behaviors while under the influence could have led to the trauma, especially if you didn't have the insight (and how would a 4 or 14 year old understand) that her behavior was the result of the pills. The movie, "Requiem for a Dream" addresses this in a way, but it is pretty intense and may be triggering.
