Are you talking about St Nicholas? Though I don't know of any slaves for him, nor for a loving God for that matter.

The God I know has nothing to do with fear, but of love.
If one does not have a belief in the after-physical-life, then fear should not be an option... and if one does believe in eternal energy, then IMO a choice does need to be made... still, fear is an option?
