Just remember that for many people with mental illnesses/disorders, parasuicidal behavior is a massive cry for help - and also a sign that the person is still fighting. If they were at the point of ending their life, they likely would not have contacted you prior and set it up so that they would be rescued. It sounds like they are still putting up a fight and also sending up flares for help in that fight.
