Same thing what lowinmood said about stopping abruptly! It's also a lot harder to wean yourself off them during a difficult/stressful time. It's recommended you wean when you're at a less stressful place and exams can be realllly stressful! Try to make a plan and just write down/break up tasks you need to do every day, like a half page of essay writing a day. Schedule a time to get it done, or at least how long it will take so you don't overestimate too much. You can do it and things are going to be okay!!
