The year before we did ham and after last year's power outage for 7 days: 3 days prior to T day, the day of, and 4 days after, we are doing tradition this year with all the fixin's.
Last year was a disaster on one hand. I had family and friends in town visiting, staying with me. I had to throw out all that food and that beautiful turkey that was huge and supposed to be for so many darn people. Such a waste. We ate the leftovers in the fridge first so it wouldn't go to waste, then raided the pantry so that T day we had spaghetti cooked on top of the wood burning stove.
However, it was definitely a time of family togetherness, which was the good that came out of it. Everything was shut down so there was no place to go either and then there were no electronics to distract either; so we played a lot games especially with the kids, read, and snow activities. I know they were really glad to leave as it was stressful at times, relaxing at others, but now they look on that time with laughter and fondness. Funny.
So this year, despite it being just a couple of us, we are going to go very sappy, and traditional for us. Small brunch buffet in the morning to watch the parade (that we missed too last year) with deviled eggs, fruit, banana or zucchini bread, meat (summer sausage)/cheese/cracker platter, and veggy tray. For dinner: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas, yams, cranberry sauce, and then pecan and pumpkin pie for dessert.
I definitely won't be getting my cholesterol checked for some after this day and we will have leftovers for a long, long time; however, it should be tasty.
