I will have to agree with you; I also prefer the original release by far, but I also found some worthy scenes in the extended version as well. But yes, I agree with everything you pointed out

That's a nasty bit of work to hide Elena's letters! It seemed really artificial to have Alfredo do that. In the original, Toto's lost love is just lost. Because in life...that's just the sad way it happens with first loves. No need to mettle and hide love letters, as done in the director's cut.
