Rape is most often an act of violence against the other for one to several reasons, and in usually more than one way. Rarely is it about the se *first*. I mean, if it were about just gratification, there 10,000 ways to reach that, ya know? The sexual gratification is secondary to the act itself.

I was told that by a professional once, and believe it to be true.

If that's the case, it is a mixture I think. There is the sexual gratification (most of the time), but it's secondary to the act of violence, demeaning, subduing, power, control, etc.

Food for thought...

With that being the case, some professionals believe that rape, as well as other sexual crimes, would still occur without the physical gratification involved...because it's first about something else.
