My thyroid stopped functioning five or six years ago, probably due to having taken lithium for the past twenty years. It's not a big deal, though. I just take another med every day, and I'm fine. My hands are a little shaky from time to time, but, as I take several meds, I'm not sure it's because of the lithium. If there are other side effects, I'm not aware of them.
