Yep, as a survivor of abuse, I've looked at this hard.

In looking back (now that I have complete memory to put things together), I see no difference in the physical/mental abuse during the times where sexual came in. The violence and my fear/giving in is what he "got off" on. In fact, it was that that led to the sexual...I firmly believe that the first sparked the other and when sexual wasn't even in the picture afterward, he still continued with the mental/physical. It was the constant that fed him. It was like the sexual was just an "after thought" and far from the primary focus.
