I've sort of rediscovered this stuff and it's such a helpful thing to keep in your head from day to day. Type it in and you usually come up with ten most common distortions. One that seems to often recur to me is uh....well where does it fit in? maybe awfullizing or magnification or all or none thinking? Anyway for me it's the concept of perfectionism, feeling you should or must be a certain way. Like today I was thinking I should prioritize my goals so that I use my time most efficiently. So I said my word for today is PRIORITIZE. Then right away thanks to my frequent reading on cognitive distortions, rational thinking, etc. I said to myself 'now don't feel you have to be perfect in this prioritizing.' If I can get 85% of it right that will be pretty good. So not too much napping or TV watching.
So....I invite any of you here to think about how often you feel guilty for not performing up some quite high standard you feel you should be at. Isn't that unrealistic? Aren't we all imperfect beings? Doesn't that invite stress? It's called feeling you should or you must be a certain way, shoulding on yourself or musterbating. Procrastinating? Once you relieve some of that tension and understand procrastination is a normal thing it becomes easier to overcome. Maybe you can reach that high standard but give yourself time to mature and allow for unforeseen tripups along the way.
