I think it says a lot about a person if they are jealous of pets. I had an ex (a selfish, self-centered alcoholic) who wanted me to say that I loved her more than I loved my elderly cats. She was hugely offended that I would not - they had been with me for over a decade! The kind of love you have for a cat is not the same as a love for a partner...it's not a competition. My current boyfriend has a dog he dearly loves and when he first met my dog, who is very frightened of men, he spent a half hour sitting on the floor waiting for her to feel brave enough to come and say hello. That is when I knew for sure he was the right one for me! A partner who is jealous of your love for pets will be jealous of your children too. It sounds like being an hour away is good for everyone involved.
