I guess you really have to think about how close you felt to him, emotionally. And that might account for the chairs seeming closer. Either way, I think something very important happened because you are naturally experiencing a sense of closeness and together. Yes, rationally you can think of where it's coming from... but the important part is that you're feeling it.
