I'm on a fairly low dose of Lithium at 600mg per day. I took it almost 20yrs ago for the first time and remember the terrible memory problems. I worked as a crane operator and I had to remember hundreds of sets of numbers through the day. If I didn't write them down when the guy was explaining them to me, they were lost. I've not experienced any sexual dysfunction on these drugs. Keep in mind whatever side effect you are having may lessen or go away in time.
I had to renew my CDL back then and stupidly put down I was taking Lithium. About 6 weeks later I got a notice from the DMV that my license was suspended for a year for taking a banned substance! I quit the Lithium immediately. Oh, I was pissed...thinking here I am trying to address an issue and they're sticking it to me. But that was that...they wouldn't allow me to appeal, and I had to ride out the year suspension. Feck 'em...I drove anyway. NEVER tell the truth on government forms.
Started Lithium again 4yrs ago, and have had no real problems with it besides a slight tremor in my right hand. Its not noticable unless I hold out my phone to show someone a picture. I drink a ton of water every day, so I've not experienced any toxicity that way. I did however by taking Advil (ibuprofen).
I was taking it 3-4 times per day as directed by my doctor for a shoulder injury. Shortly after beginning this drug I started getting back aches. They got so bad over a 1-2 month period it felt like my back may spasm. About that time I read that ibuprofen blocks the timely excretion of the spent Lithium...leading to toxicity...that resulted in kidney pain that manifested itself as back pain. The pain went away and stayed away when I quit the Advil.
My Lithium 600mg and Lamictal 200mg regimen saves my bacon, and this time I haven't had any memory issues. These aren't big doses comparatively speaking, but they do what they're supposed to do with few (I didin't say none) side effects. My big issues of unbelievable spending and hypomania just kinda dissolved after a couple months on this combo.
I'll put up with the side effects before I return to my previous behavior, no two ways about it!
